I am currently working on my mathematics degree online. I try not to brag about it, but I cannot help it. Of all things! Mathematics is a subject feared by many and those who like it also know it can be very frustrating at times working through those tough problems. So is it possible to obtain a mathematics degree online? Absolutely, in fact I believe it is easier to learn online. The very fact that you have to research the problem and come up with a solution on your own rather than giving up and getting the answer from a professor or fellow student, makes grasping the idea and retaining it that much easier.
So where do I start? Sadly to say there is only one creditable university that you can attend, The University of Illinois at Springfield. It offers a B.A. in Mathematical Sciences. It truly is sad that there is only one creditable university that offers this, but the good news is that the University of Illinois is doing a great job delivering this program that you will not want to go anywhere else. If you wish to further your education and get a Masters Degree in Mathematics then you will want to visit the University of Washington. Another creditable university!
A few things to point out:
1. Some courses will still require that you purchase a text book.
2. Some will still require that you attend a virtual class meeting once or twice per semester.
3. Some courses require their exams proctored at your expense. Others will just give you an online test.
4. You should have a scanner and a good working computer with reliable high speed internet.
5. Before you start you should have already completed your general education courses at a local university or college.
Number 3 above will only be required by a few courses. Proctoring an exam is necessary in some cases. Also, the university must keep a high standard in educating its students and therefore they must have some exams proctored or administered to ensure a good quality education.
